Today I sat contemplating the meaning of the term ‘eco fashion’. I thought to myself, “If anyone should really understand the meaning of the above it should be me, as I have dedicated the best part of three years toward the creation of an eco fashion brand.” The problem is there is no point in me understanding the meaning if others can’t conceptualise the term, and how it may fit into their lifestyle. So here we are, and I am going to attempt to detail the meaning of ‘eco fashion’.

Eco fashion could quite literally be seen as two entirely different entities. Firstly the idea of ecological and environmentally sustainable ideas being somewhat of a trend, fad, or as it states fashion, something that may be washed away or brushed under the carpet in years to come. Secondly it can be viewed as fashion, as in clothing, accessories, perfumes, aftershaves and footwear, which is made with the environment in mind.

For the purpose of ‘eco fashion’ as apparel and its derivatives, the point to focus on is the statement that ‘eco fashion’ is fashion made with the environment in mind. What does this really mean? From my point of view it can mean one of four things;

- Fashion produced and created through the use of organic materials

- Fashion produced and created through the use of recycling of otherwise excess fabrics

- Fashion produced and created through the use of recycled materials not initially directly related to fashion

- Fashion produced and created that gives back directly to the planet.

These are my four categories and I think you will agree they capture the essence of ‘eco fashion’ fabulously. Under the above headings many designers, brands and labels have designed products that can appeal to the wider public, however currently the proportion of the population that really embraces products made under the ‘eco fashion’ title remains niche. This is by no means a problem because ‘eco fashion’ is young and has over 100 years or more of modern styling to compete with.

The more pressing question is to ask, “What will happen over the coming years?” Some might say it has already begun; is ‘eco fashion’ blending and merging with regular fashion? Has it become apparent that the ‘eco fashion’ route is not so much more expensive, and creates large benefits in comparison to regular production methods? Currently as a result of smaller scale designers, brands and labels, the law of economy of scale dictate, that anything done on a small scale will ultimately be expensive, but if ‘eco fashion’ moves mainstream and all processes are inherently eco friendly there will be no definition just a shift in foundation principles.

Some might question why I am writing this as I am one of the small producers of ‘eco fashion’ that will suffer as a result. Well that is where you are wrong, yes we would no longer be niche, but it won’t be the customers who need us directly it will be the mainstream department stores, clothing stores and such like who will lend from our experience and expertise.

The proponents of ‘eco fashion’ have prepared for this period of change and it will be us at the forefront of the eco evolution. I for one will continue to champion the cause of mainstream ‘eco fashion’ because it can only benefit our people and our planet and unless I am mistaken the point of ‘eco fashion’ is to benefit both the customer and the planet, not to remain niche. Recently I have been dismayed when reading and listening to so called eco-gurus, eco-reporters, eco-commentators and eco-critics use the term “eco has gone too mainstream”, what is that all about? Working together should only be seen as positive. I don’t care if it is a multi billion dollar corporation that decides to have eco policies or the small start up, every little count. I sympathise with those who say “how can an oil company be eco-friendly?” The point is not their core business, but the fact that they acknowledge their responsibility and decide to take positive action. No one can expect companies to stop operating because their industry is seen as ecologically damaging, that is complete nonsense.

Sometimes I fear that ‘eco fashion’ is just that, an idea for people to jump on the bandwagon and when they get bored, and too many people have the same idea as them it won’t be fashionable anymore. Eco fashion can be a cause for good for the future, we should move forward together, not fighting, or criticising the efforts of others just because we don’t like people crowding our fashion. We need to farsighted in our quest for success, as our chosen niche grows as it should we must not lose sight of our values. In conclusion I would urge all those who believe in, or are concerned for the preservation of our planet to work with those who are new to an eco way of thinking, or being. What are family get-togethers? There are those who term them as family meetings while others call them family reunion. Whichever name seems appropriate for you I cannot emphasize enough how important they are but I am going to list its importance and elaborate a little. It is a dream for every person to have a happy family, unfortunately this isn’t achieved easily.

What is your description of a happy family? Does it mean the absence of challenges? For me I describe a happy family as the one with siblings who are loyal to one another, they shoulder one another’s burdens by coming up with solutions of day to day problems facing the family. To conclude, a happy family is the one that love prevails which makes all family members to be united. When united many things are achieved and the family progress snowballs.

What are family get-togethers, you ask? When members of a family organize to meet (not necessary in their home) so as to enjoy one another’s company and carry out some activities together as a family then this is what is termed as a family get-together. These days people are busy, children could be staying in far distances from their parents due to education or work. They never get to see one another and the only way of making them to be together for a few hours or even days is holding a family get-together.

Importance of Family Get-Togethers

1.) Knowing Each Other

The family starts as a nuclear family, gradually it grows to an extended family. Family get-together will help family members to know one another. Children will know their grandparents (that is if grandparents are still alive). Children will also know their cousins, uncles and aunts. Grandparents will also get a chance of seeing their children and grandchildren. The uncles and aunts also interact with their nephews and nieces. These also helps sister in-laws to enjoy the company of one another and knowing each other.

2.) Solving Problems

There is no family without challenges which pose as problems. During family get-togethers, family members will discuss these problems which at times makes parents to be depressed. They’ll come up with solutions. When children come together and solve such problems their parents are relieved. When it comes to solving problems, family members should put aside their personal differences. What is said should not be taken personal.

Each member of the family should be free to say what he/she feels like. Sincerity should be exercised by each member. An advice that is not sincere only meant to please the concerned member will be of no use. A sincere advice will help the family member concerned to make changes in his/her life where he/she went astray. It is much better to be hurt by the truth than be told lies which makes you happy in the short period but which will worsen the situation. A person who progresses in life is the sort of person who accepts his/her mistakes and is willing to get help from others.

3.) Planning Family Projects

Family members during a get-together can discuss family activities. Parents and children will plan many issues of the family. The family members will discuss the already existing family projects, plan new projects, plan when the new projects will commence, plan how the new projects will be financed and how they will be managed.

As per my view, when family members have something in common other than sharing the same parents they will always find a reason of coming together to discuss. It acts as a catalyst of bringing them together to discuss and get along with one another. As such families should have at least one project and each member should be assigned a duty. Each member should be accountable in ensuring that he/she discharges the duty according to the powers given to him/her without any ultra vires.

A family project can either be a big one or a small one. A simple project like where family members who are employed can organize themselves to “A Family Financial Merry Go Round” can boost their savings. As simple as this project is can enable family member to deposit a certain percentage of their income on a monthly basis and at the end of the year they will have saved a lump sum amount of money that will empower them to start projects that are big. Children who are in schools will interact with one another when they attend a family get-together. They will learn from one another in matters pertaining to academics. Not all children in the family are performing well in school. Those children who have excelled will help their cousins to excel also in academics. Parents through family get-togethers arrange meetings with their children so as to advice them and encourage them to work hard in their academics.

The meeting will help parents to know the problems their children are facing in school. It makes parents and children to interact in an open way which mostly is rare in families.

5.) Family Bonds Are Strengthened

Evening dresses had low necklines and very short, off-the-shoulder sleeves, and were worn with short (later mid-length) gloves. Other characteristic fashions included a velvet ribbon tied high around the neck and trailing behind for evening (the origin of the modern choker necklace). Women weighing from 160 lbs to 299 lbs had to wear a Bodree. A Bodree is a bone shaped support made to lift up the stomach and breasts. It was constructed of linen and fish skin around the outside and wood on the inside. This was only popular from 1860′s to the 1890′s. Tea gowns and artistic dress Under the influence of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and other artistic reformers, the “anti-fashion” for Artistic dress with its “medieval” details and uncorseted lines continued through the 1870s. Newly fashionable tea gowns, an informal fashion for entertaining at home, combined Pre-Raphaelite influences with the loose sack-back styles of the eighteenth century . Leisure Dress Leisure dress was becoming an important part of a women’s wardrobe. Seaside dress in England had its own distinct characteristics but still followed the regular fashions of the day. Seaside dress was seen as more daring, frivolous, eccentric, and brighter. Even though the bustle was extremely cumbersome, it was still a part of seaside fashion. Hairstyles and headgear In keeping with the vertical emphasis, hair was pulled back at the sides and worn in a high knot or cluster of ringlets, often with a fringe (bangs) over the forehead.
