News today – Women Prone to Infection When Fertile Period. Fertile period always anticipated for any couple who want a pregnancy. But at the time of ovulation, women were more prone to infection.
The team of researchers from Spain have a hypothesis which revealed that during the period of ovulation, a woman’s body’s immune system naturally tends to weaken to allow the sperm to fertilize eggs and then women are more likely to become infected.
To get at the truth, the research was conducted. The result, the study revealed that tests on rats supports their initial hypothesis. Researchers studied female mice are prone to fungal infection and have a lower immune response during ovulation.
The researcher also explained, that the hormones associated with ovulation, called estradiol, appears to target dendritic cells, making them weaker, and less able to fight infection.
At worst, this effect can also make women more likely to have contracted sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
“This could be an explanation why during ovulation women have a greater risk of infection of sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV or HPV,” said Miguel Relloso PhD researcher from the Hospital Gregorio Maranon, as reported by Womansday, Thursday (01/05/2012).
The study, published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, underscores the need for regular testing of infectious diseases and the use of condoms during intercourse.
